How Much RSO Should I Take?
One of the most commonly asked questions about Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) is: How much RSO should I take? The short answer is: Your RSO dose should depend on your tolerance level with cannabis and your experience level with using RSO. I am a big believer in starting “low and slow.”
For beginners, start with a small spot of RSO about a quarter to a third the size of a grain of rice, or less if you feel unsure about getting started. Dipping your toes into RSO use could even begin with microdosing: the act or practice of taking tiny amounts of a drug in order to test or benefit from its physiological action while minimizing undesirable side effects.
The standard size dose of RSO for a person with a high tolerance and experience taking RSO is typically about the size of grain of rice. For a deeper dive on this question check out my blog Consuming RSO: How to Select an effective dose.
Let’s take a walk through some of the most commonly asked questions about Rick Simpson Oil. It is important to understand what RSO is, why people use it and then we can take a deep dive into how much a reasonable dose is. Let’s jump in!
What is Rick Simpson Oil?
Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) known as one of the most potent forms of cannabis oil. Cannabis oil is made by using a variety of different solvents to extract the resinous cannabinoids into an extract that is more potent than cannabis buds. Rick Simpson Oil is most commonly made by using 99% alcohol or Naptha to extract the resinous cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. The solvent is then purged off and what remains is a viscous, potent cannabis oil that can be ingested in a variety of ways.
The oil is named after Rick Simpson, the man who publicized the use of alcohol extracted cannabis oil as a potential treatment for cancer and other health issues. Rick Simpson made his own cannabis oil and used it to treat a variety of different health issues on himself and other people. After Rick Simpson had such a profound experience with the cannabis oil he made, he was committed to sharing this information with people. His website shares information to empower people to make their own cannabis oil.
What is RSO oil used for?
Rick Simpson oil is used for a variety of different purposes ranging from medical intent to recreational use. There are countless anecdotal stories of people who have used RSO as medicine. Many recreational marijuana users also find it to be effective because it is very strong and a small dose is very powerful. As such, it is both an economical and powerful form of cannabis.
How long does RSO take to kick in?
How long it takes for RSO to kick in depends on the method of ingestion. If you consume RSO by eating it, the typical time it takes to kick in is 15 minutes to 45 minutes. RSO can be turned into a tincture and taken sublingually, which has a more immediate effect. Sublingual ingestion will typically kick in between 1-15 minutes. Lastly if you vaporize RSO you can feel the effects immediately.
Can you put RSO in coffee?
You can put one dose of RSO in your coffee or tea. You can also cook with RSO, using it to make cannabis salad dressing or other cooking oils or tinctures.
Will RSO make you sleepy?
RSO is a potent cannabis oil, accordingly if you take a high dose of cannabis oil it can definitely make you sleepy. One of the side effects of taking a high dose of cannabinoids is feeling very sleepy. For some people this is a welcome experience if you have a hard time falling asleep. However, if you don’t wish to feel sleepy after taking your RSO, I suggest starting with a very small dose.
RSO Dosing
Dosing RSO always depends on your tolerance of cannabis and the goals of using Rick Simpson Oil. If you are a beginner with cannabis, remember to start “low and slow.” If you are a person with a high tolerance for cannabinoids, then a higher dose might fit your needs better. RSO typically comes in an oral syringe. Since it is such a thick and viscous texture, it is difficult to measure the exact milligrams of THC if you consume the oil directly out of the oral syringe. Most people who consume RSO out of the oral syringe directly use the size of a grain of rice as the measuring stick for the size of your dose. If you are a beginner, the smaller the better! No dose is too small because you can always take more. If you are a beginner with RSO and trying to find the right dose, you can take a small amount (less than a ⅓ of the size of a grain of rice) and wait 1-2 hours. If you feel like you need more than you can always take another dose until you find just the right amount for your own body and desired experience.
If you dilute your RSO into an oil tincture, it is much easier to calculate the milligrams of THC you will be consuming by dose. In the above link there is a recipe with the mathematical formula you can use to calculate the milligrams per dose once 1 gram of RSO is suspended in 2 ounces of carrier oil.
